Placentia bulky item pickup is free three times a year, with up to ten items each. Ten items is a solid allowance. However, the program is limited to single-family homes, which leaves a lot of residents out.

Placentia shares this rule with Garden Grove and Yorba Linda. By contrast, La Habra counts its allowance per unit so apartments get the same deal as houses, and Lake Forest gives multifamily buildings ten collections a year. The county is genuinely inconsistent on this point.

What the Program Covers

Three collections a year, ten items each, which is thirty items annually for a qualifying household.

Ten items lets you finish a job rather than ration it. A bedroom, a patio set or a stretch of garage shelving can go in one visit instead of being spread across the calendar.

No Household Hazardous Waste

Placentia states this one plainly: hazardous waste is not part of the bulky program.

So paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil all need a county collection facility. OC Waste and Recycling lists the sites and the hours, and the service is free.

Construction and demolition debris is excluded as well, which rules out remodel material, drywall, tile and lumber.

Older Neighborhoods, Deeper Garages

Placentia has a long history for a north county city, including the George Key Ranch and the Atwood neighborhood annexed in the early 1970s.

Older housing tends to mean detached garages, narrow side yards and long walks from the back of a lot to the street. Meanwhile, the crew collects at the curb and nowhere else. Consequently, the walk is usually the hard part, not the item count.
