Free Bulky Item Pickup in Orange County: All 34 Cities

Free bulky item pickup in Orange County comes with your trash service, and almost nobody uses it. Most people either drag a couch to the curb and hope for the best, or they pay someone before checking what they already get for nothing. However, the rules change at every city line, and they change a lot.

Fullerton gives you unlimited pickups. Meanwhile, La Palma gives you two items, once a year. Those cities sit twenty minutes apart. So before you book anyone, including us, it is worth knowing which deal you are actually sitting on.

Below is every city, its hauler and its limits, checked against official city and hauler sources in September 2026.

Bulky Item Pickup in Orange County, City by City

We have split the county into four groups to keep things readable. Where a row says Call, the city genuinely does not publish a number, so ring the hauler instead of trusting a figure from elsewhere.

North Orange County

This is the county’s most generous corner. In fact, Fullerton and Brea between them offer the two best deals anywhere in Orange County.

Central Orange County

Central cities are stricter, and several of them quietly exclude apartments. Irvine in particular looks generous until you read the item cap.

South Orange County

Most of South County runs on CR&R, so the programs look similar. Still, the allowances differ more than you would expect for one hauler.

Coastal Orange County

Beach cities vary the most. Consequently, neighbors a mile apart can get very different deals. Newport Beach is among the best in the county, while Seal Beach is among the tightest.

The Best Bulky Item Pickup in Orange County

Fullerton stands alone. Republic Services caps neither pickups nor items there, which makes a Fullerton garage cleanout far cheaper than it first appears. The city does draw a line at building materials, paint, tires and oil.

Brea allows three pickups of twenty items, and then adds something no other city matches: unlimited e-waste pickups. As a result, old TVs, monitors and computers never touch your three allowances.

Newport Beach offers five pickups a year at five items each, the highest pickup count of any large city here. Orange permits six, although only four items at a time.

The Tightest Cities, and What That Means for You

La Palma is the strictest in the county. Two items, once a year, at the curb by 6 a.m. Consequently, a single bedroom set burns a decade of allowance.

Westminster allows two items every thirty days and excludes mattresses outright. Fortunately, there is a free mattress drop-off at 14451 Cedarwood Street, open weekdays 8 to 4. Take advantage of it if you can fit the mattress in a vehicle.

Irvine looks reasonable at four pickups a year, but the item cap bites. You get four items, and a fifth counts as an entire second pickup. Therefore, an Irvine living room refresh can burn half your year in one afternoon.

Seal Beach allows two pickups of one item each. In other words, two items a year in total.

What Almost No City Will Take

Exclusions are remarkably consistent across haulers county-wide. Furthermore, they rarely change. Therefore, assume these remain your problem regardless of where you live:

  • Construction and demolition debris, concrete, asphalt, dirt and sandbags
  • Household hazardous waste, paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil
  • Tires and car parts
  • Anything over roughly 150 pounds or larger than about 8 by 4 feet

Hazardous material has its own route. Specifically, Orange County runs free household hazardous waste centers, and OC Waste and Recycling lists the drop-off locations. San Clemente goes further still and offers free door-to-door hazardous waste pickup, which is unusual and genuinely useful.

Apartments and Condos Get the Worst Deal

If you rent, read this part carefully. Several cities cut multifamily buildings out of the free program completely. For example, Garden Grove, Placentia and Yorba Linda all restrict it to single-family homes. Meanwhile, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach push buildings of five or more units onto commercial bin service, and Costa Mesa states plainly that dumpster customers are not eligible.

A few cities do better. La Habra counts its four annual pickups per unit, so apartment residents get the same deal as houses. Similarly, Lake Forest allows ten pickups a year per enclosure, and Santa Ana gives apartments ten items per unit each quarter.

Still, the pattern holds. The people with the least room to store an old couch usually have the fewest ways to get rid of it.

How to Book Bulky Item Pickup in Orange County

The process is roughly the same everywhere. First, call your hauler or use their website. Next, list the specific items, because crews often refuse anything not on the ticket. Then set everything at the curb the night before, rather than days ahead. Finally, keep bulky items well clear of your carts.

Two details trip people up. To begin with, several cities require advance notice, from 48 hours in Huntington Beach, Irvine and Cypress to a full week in Westminster. In addition, Brea asks residents not to set items out until the scheduled day, and most cities can fine you for leaving furniture at the curb without a booking.

When the Free Pickup Is Not Enough

Free bulky item pickup in Orange County works beautifully for one couch or a single washer. However, it falls apart in three situations.

Volume. A garage cleanout means thirty or forty items, not four. Even Fullerton’s unlimited program still expects you to haul everything to the curb yourself.

Labor. This is the big one. Every city program is curbside only. Nobody carries a sleeper sofa down from a second-floor bedroom, and Anaheim states outright that crews will not enter your home. As a result, if you cannot get the item to the curb, the free pickup effectively does not exist for you.

Timing. Pickups land days or weeks out. That rarely lines up with a move-out date, a close of escrow or a tenant turnover.

That is where we come in. Doctor Junk Removal works seven days a week across Orange County, usually same day or next day. Our crew handles the carrying, the stairs and the loading, so nothing has to reach the curb first. Pricing starts at $125, and we quote the whole job before we touch anything. Besides mattress removal, we clear furniture, appliances, garages and entire estates in every city listed above.

In short, use your free city pickups. They are genuinely worth having. Then call us for everything they were never designed to cover.
