Mission Viejo Bulky Item Pickup: Three Free Every Year

Mission Viejo bulky item pickup is free three times a year, and it covers more than most residents realize. WM runs the program for the city, and it takes electronics too, instead of pushing them off to a separate trip.

We are based in Mission Viejo ourselves, so this is the program we get asked about most.

What Mission Viejo Bulky Item Pickup Covers

Residents get three collections per calendar year, free of charge, with up to five large items each time. As a result, that totals fifteen items a year.

The city describes eligible material as furniture, appliances, electronic equipment and other similar items. Electronics being folded into the same pickup is genuinely useful. In Huntington Beach, by contrast, Republic refuses televisions outright, so residents there must drive them to a county facility themselves.

What Is Not Accepted

Fortunately, the exclusions are short. Bulky waste does not include car bodies, or construction and demolition waste.

So a remodel is out. In other words, anything structural stays your problem. Old cabinets, drywall, tile and framing lumber all fall outside the program, no matter how neatly they are stacked.

Household hazardous waste also needs its own route. Paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil go to a county collection facility, and OC Waste and Recycling publishes the locations.

How to Schedule a Pickup

Call WM at 949-642-1191, or email wmservice@wm.com. The city asks that you schedule at least 48 hours in advance, and items go at the curb on your regular service day.

The full rules sit on the City of Mission Viejo recycling page.

One seasonal note. Christmas trees have a separate recycling program that runs for about three weeks after the holiday, and decorations have to come off first. Crews still collect flocked trees, although no facility can recycle them.

A Warning About Irvine Numbers

Mission Viejo and Irvine share a hauler and even share a phone number. However, their allowances are different. Irvine gives four pickups of four items; Mission Viejo gives three pickups of five. However, people regularly quote one city’s rules in the other and get turned away, so check which city you are actually in.

Where Mission Viejo Bulky Item Pickup Runs Out

Five items covers a bedroom refresh. However, it does not cover much else.

Cleanouts. A garage, an estate or a hoarding situation runs to dozens of items. Three pickups a year will not touch it.

Anything indoors. The program is curbside. Nobody comes inside for a sleeper sofa or a treadmill in a spare room, which means the heavy lifting is still yours.

Deadlines. Escrow closings and tenant turnovers rarely allow 48 hours plus a service day.

Meanwhile, we handle all of it. Our crews run junk removal in Mission Viejo seven days a week, usually same day or next day, and we do the carrying. That includes mattress removal, appliances, furniture, garage cleanouts and full estate cleanouts.

Use your three free pickups first. Then call us for the rest.
