Irvine Bulky Item Pickup: How It Works and What WM Won't Take
Got an old couch, a broken dresser or a pile of yard waste in Irvine? Before you drag it to the curb, it helps to know how the city’s bulky item program works. This guide covers Irvine bulky item pickup rules, what your carts can’t take, and when a junk removal crew makes more sense.
How Irvine Bulky Item Pickup Works
Waste Management (WM) collects residential trash in Irvine. According to WM’s Irvine newsletter, households can schedule up to four free bulky pickups a year. Each pickup can include up to four large items, like furniture or appliances, or up to 20 bags of trash or yard waste weighing under 50 pounds each. Electronics such as TVs, computers and monitors are included too.
To use it, schedule your pickup at least 48 hours before your regular collection day. Then place the items out as instructed. Also, keep in mind that putting out more than four items can count as a second pickup.
What Irvine Trash Carts Won’t Take
WM’s Irvine service page says these items don’t belong in your regular carts:
- Construction waste
- Auto parts and tires
- Household hazardous waste, like paint, oil and cleaners
- Medical waste
- Electronic waste
- Food scraps (ask WM which cart they belong in)
In addition, green waste carts can’t include palm fronds, soil, rocks, cactus, yucca or manure. For paint, chemicals and electronics, Irvine residents can use the county’s free household hazardous waste centers instead.
Limits of Irvine Bulky Item Pickup
The program is a great deal for a few items. However, it has limits. First, four pickups a year go fast during a move or remodel. Second, items need to be outside, so you still have to carry that sleeper sofa down the stairs. Third, construction debris and heavy remodel waste aren’t part of the program.
When to Call a Junk Removal Crew
A junk removal company makes sense when you have more than four large items or you can’t move heavy things yourself. It also helps when you need everything gone before a move-out date. For example, clearing a full garage or an estate usually takes one visit instead of several scheduled pickups.
Tips Before Your Pickup
Start by sorting what can be donated. Next, bag loose items and keep hazardous materials separate. Finally, if you live in an apartment, ask your property manager how bulky items are handled in your community, since rules can differ from single-family homes.
