How to Dispose of Old Paint in Orange County (Free Options)
Almost every garage in Orange County has a shelf of half-used paint cans. Maybe they’re from a bedroom repaint, a fence project or touch-ups the previous owner left behind. Eventually, though, the paint dries out, the cans rust and you need the space back. So how do you dispose of paint in Orange County the right way?
The good news is that most options are free. Here’s what to know.
Why You Can’t Just Throw Paint in the Trash
Paint contains ingredients that require special handling, especially oil-based paint, stains and solvents. As a result, liquid paint shouldn’t go in your trash cart, down a drain or into a storm drain, where it can pollute waterways and eventually reach the ocean. Instead, it needs to go to a proper collection site.
Option 1: Drop It Off Free Through PaintCare
California’s PaintCare program lets households drop off leftover paint for free at participating locations, many of which are paint and hardware stores. According to PaintCare, there are hundreds of year-round drop-off sites across the state.
PaintCare accepts house paint, primers, stains, sealers and clear coatings like shellac and varnish. The program is funded by a small fee added when you buy new paint, which is why drop-off doesn’t cost anything.
However, each site may have limits on how much it accepts at once, and not every product qualifies. For example, aerosol spray paint and specialty coatings may need to go elsewhere. So check the PaintCare site locator and call ahead before you load up the car.
Option 2: Use a County Hazardous Waste Center
Orange County residents can also take paint to one of the free household hazardous waste collection centers run by OC Waste & Recycling. The centers are in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine and San Juan Capistrano, and they’re generally open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. They also take other hazardous items, like cleaners, pesticides, batteries and motor oil, so it’s a good choice if you’re clearing out a whole garage shelf.
Keep in mind that the centers close during rainy weather and on major holidays. In addition, there are safety limits on certain quantities, so review the county’s fact sheets for large amounts.
Option 3: Use It Up or Give It Away
Before you dispose of paint, consider whether someone else can use it. For instance, neighbors, community theaters, schools and nonprofits sometimes welcome good leftover paint. Likewise, small amounts can be used for touch-ups, primer coats or garage projects.
What About Empty or Dried Paint Cans?
Cans that are completely empty or contain only fully dried latex paint are handled differently from liquid paint in many areas. However, rules vary by city and hauler, so check with your local trash provider before tossing them. When in doubt, bring them to a paint drop-off site or hazardous waste center.
How to Transport Paint Safely
- Keep lids tightly closed and cans upright.
- Use a box or bin so cans don’t tip over in your car.
- Keep paint in its original container with the label if possible.
- Never mix different paints or chemicals together.
- Don’t leave paint in a hot car for long periods.
Clearing Out More Than Paint?
Paint is usually just one part of a cluttered garage. So once you’ve dropped off paint and chemicals, the rest of the garage, including shelves, boxes and old furniture, can be hauled away in one trip by a junk removal company.
