How to Dispose of a Mattress in Orange County (Free and Paid Options)

Mattresses are bulky, heavy and awkward, and you can’t just put one in the trash cart. As a result, a lot of people end up leaving old mattresses on the curb or next to a dumpster, which can lead to fines. The good news is that there are several legal ways to dispose of a mattress in Orange County, and some of them are free.

Here are your best options, along with the pros and cons of each.

1. Drop It Off Free Through the OC Mattress Recycling Program

Orange County residents can take mattresses to participating county landfills for free through the OC Waste & Recycling mattress program. According to the county, Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha accept mattress-only loads at no charge, with no limit on quantity.

However, there are a few catches. The load must contain only mattresses and box springs; if you bring other trash, regular disposal fees apply. In addition, wet or heavily soiled mattresses, waterbeds, air mattresses and sofa beds aren’t accepted. And, of course, you’ll need a vehicle big enough to haul it.

2. Schedule Your City’s Bulky Item Pickup

Most Orange County cities include free bulky item pickups with residential trash service, and mattresses usually qualify. That makes this one of the easiest free options. On the downside, pickups often need to be scheduled in advance, the number of pickups per year is limited, and you have to move the mattress to the curb yourself.

3. Ask the Retailer When You Buy a New One

If you’re replacing your mattress, ask the store about taking the old one away. In California, retailers that deliver a new mattress are required to offer to pick up your old one at no extra charge. Just make sure to request it when you order, and have the old mattress ready on delivery day.

4. Donate It (If It’s in Great Shape)

Some charities accept mattresses, but most have strict rules. Generally, a donated mattress must be clean, free of stains and tears, and have no signs of bed bugs or pet damage. Many thrift stores don’t take used mattresses at all for health reasons, so call ahead before you load it up.

5. Hire a Junk Removal Company

If you don’t have a truck, can’t lift it or need it gone quickly, a junk removal company is the simplest way to dispose of a mattress in Orange County. A crew will carry it out from inside your home, even from upstairs rooms, and take it to a recycling facility when possible. Plus, they can remove the bed frame, box spring and any other junk in the same trip.

Why Mattress Recycling Matters

A single mattress takes up a lot of landfill space. Fortunately, the county notes that more than 80% of a mattress can be recycled. Steel springs become scrap metal, foam can be turned into carpet padding, and wood frames can be chipped for other uses. That’s why recycling is a much better choice than sending an old mattress to be buried.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t leave it on the curb without a scheduled pickup.
  • Don’t put it next to an apartment or business dumpster that isn’t meant for bulky items.
  • Don’t dump it in an alley, lot or canyon. Illegal dumping fines in California start at $250 and go up quickly.

Which Option Is Best for You?

If you have a truck and a clean mattress-only load, the free county drop-off is hard to beat. On the other hand, if you’re buying a new mattress, retailer pickup is the easiest route. And if you want it gone today without lifting a finger, a junk removal company is the fastest option.
