Dishwasher Disposal in Orange County: Your Options
Dishwashers don’t fail quietly. One day it leaks, the next it won’t drain, and soon a new one is on the way. Then comes the question of what to do with the old machine. Here’s how dishwasher disposal works in Orange County.
Step One: Disconnect It Safely
A dishwasher connects to a water supply line, a drain line and electrical power. Before removal, turn off the water and power, and then disconnect the lines carefully. If you’re not comfortable doing that, have a plumber or your installer handle it. Also, keep towels nearby, since some water always stays inside.
Option 1: Ask the Installer or Retailer
Many appliance stores and installers offer haul-away when they deliver a new dishwasher. Sometimes it’s included, and sometimes there’s a fee. So ask when you schedule installation.
Option 2: Use Bulky Item Pickup
Most Orange County cities include appliances in their bulky item programs. However, limits and scheduling rules vary. In addition, you’ll need to move the dishwasher to the curb yourself. Check our bulky item pickup guide for local details.
Option 3: Recycle It
Dishwashers contain steel, copper wiring and other recyclable parts. As a result, scrap metal recyclers often accept them. Call ahead first, because policies differ from yard to yard.
Option 4: Take It to a County Landfill
According to OC Waste & Recycling, county landfills accept household appliances at normal fees for Orange County residents. For hours and fees, see our Orange County dump guide.
Option 5: Hire a Junk Removal Crew
If you’re also clearing old cabinets, counters or other appliances, a junk removal crew can take everything at once. That’s especially helpful during a kitchen remodel.
Don’t Leave It on the Street
An old dishwasher left in an alley counts as illegal dumping. Instead, use one of the options above.
