The city publishes the two-collection allowance clearly. The per-pickup item limit is less consistently stated.

So ask when you call rather than relying on a number from a third-party site, including this one. We would rather tell you to confirm than publish a figure we cannot stand behind.

What the Program Accepts

Coverage is genuinely wide. Appliances, furniture, televisions and electronic waste are all collected.

Televisions being included is the notable part. In Huntington Beach they are refused outright and have to be driven to a county facility, while Brea treats e-waste as a separate unlimited pickup. Dana Point simply takes them.

What Is Not Accepted

Construction and demolition debris falls outside the program, which rules out remodel material, tile, drywall and lumber.

Household hazardous waste is excluded too. Paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil go to a county collection center, and OC Waste and Recycling lists the sites and hours.

The Harbor, the Bluffs and the Lantern District

Dana Point sits on bluffs above the harbor, and the topography decides most removal jobs here.

Homes on the ocean side are often reached by outdoor stairs, or sit below street level with the living space downhill from the road. Meanwhile, the Lantern District and the streets near the harbor run narrow, with limited places for a truck to stop.

The collection happens at the curb. Therefore, whether you have two pickups or ten matters far less than whether a mattress can get up the stairs to the street.

Rentals and Turnovers

A significant share of local housing turns over as vacation and seasonal rentals. Those resets happen on fixed dates, often between bookings, and they involve a unit’s worth of furniture rather than a couple of pieces.

Two scheduled collections a year cannot flex to meet that. Consequently, property managers here tend to need a crew rather than an allowance.
