Costa Mesa Bulky Item Pickup: Free Limits and the Catch

Costa Mesa bulky item pickup is free three times a year, with up to ten items each time. Before you plan around it, though, there is one eligibility rule that quietly disqualifies thousands of residents.

It Is Not Actually the City

This trips people up constantly. Residential trash in Costa Mesa is run by the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, a separate agency from the City, and CR&R does the collecting. So when you call the City about a couch, you get redirected.

CMSD serves single-family homes and multifamily buildings of four units or fewer. Buildings with five or more units are handled separately by the City, which contracts with seven different haulers.

What Costa Mesa Bulky Item Pickup Gives You

Cart customers get three complimentary pickups per year, with ten items collected during each one. That works out to thirty items annually.

However, here is the catch: residents who use dumpsters are not eligible for the program at all. If your building has a shared dumpster rather than individual carts, you get nothing. For a city with as much rental housing as Costa Mesa, that excludes a lot of households.

What Is Excluded

The refused list is specific: asphalt, building materials, car bodies, chemicals and hazardous waste, concrete, sand or sandbags, soil, and tires.

In addition, there is a size limit that matters more than most people expect. Items cannot exceed 8 by 4 feet or weigh more than 150 pounds. As a result, a large armoire, a hot tub or a full-size shed is out of scope before the conversation even starts.

Hazardous material has its own route through OC Waste and Recycling, which runs free household hazardous waste centers across the county.

How to Book, and How Long It Takes

Call CR&R at (949) 646-4617, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also submit a request online through the CMSD large item collection page.

Be realistic about timing. CMSD states that pickups do not occur immediately and may be scheduled one or more weeks out from your request. Therefore, this is not a solution for a deadline.

For regular carts, set out no earlier than 5 p.m. the evening before collection day, and bring them in by midnight of collection day.

When the Free Program Does Not Work

Three situations come up again and again in Costa Mesa.

You have a dumpster. Then you are excluded outright, whatever the item is.

The item is too big or too heavy. Anything past 150 pounds or 8 by 4 feet falls outside the rules, which rules out most hot tubs, sheds and oversized furniture.

You need it gone this week. A pickup scheduled a week or more out does not help a move-out date or a home sale.

We cover all three. Our crews work across Costa Mesa seven days a week, usually same day or next day, and we carry items out of the house rather than waiting at the curb. We handle furniture, appliances, mattress removal, garage cleanouts and estate cleanouts.

Use your three free pickups if you qualify. Call us for everything else.
