The company began in Vancouver in 1989, when a nineteen-year-old bought an old hauling truck, and it grew from there into a franchise network. Today the brand describes itself as the world’s largest junk removal service, with roughly 150 locations across three countries and more than a thousand trucks on the road.

Every location is a franchise. Their own commercial page notes that operating hours may vary in franchise locations, which matters more here than it sounds.

How 1-800-GOT-JUNK Covers Orange County

The county is split between two separate franchises, each with its own phone number and its own hours.

Orange County North lists Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Westminster, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Woods, Laguna Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita, Foothill Ranch and Newport Coast. Its published hours run from 7 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Orange County South lists Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Ladera Ranch, Coto de Caza, Dana Point, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Capistrano Beach. Its hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and it is closed on Sunday.

Therefore the service you get depends on which half of the county you live in. A Thursday night call in Huntington Beach and a Sunday call in Mission Viejo are two very different propositions.

How Each Company Prices a Job

This is the clearest difference, and it genuinely cuts both ways.

1-800-GOT-JUNK prices by volume. In their words, your price is based on how much space your items take up in the truck, charged in eighths of a truckload, with single items priced individually by size. Their trucks hold roughly two tons. They offer free, no-obligation onsite estimates, and they say plainly that they need to see the items in person before giving an exact price.

In fairness, that quote covers everything: removal from anywhere in the house, all loading, cleanup, and disposal and environmental fees. Payment happens only once the job is done, and there is no deposit.

However, they publish no dollar figures at all for standard junk removal. There is no rate card, no minimum charge and no full-load price anywhere on the pricing page. The single number shown, from $39, belongs to Flex, a separate outdoor-pickup product. As a result, you do not learn the price until a truck is already in your driveway.

We publish ours instead. Junk removal, furniture, appliances, mattresses and cleanouts start at $125. Piano removal starts at $175 and hot tub removal at $250. Also, we quote the whole job before anything gets loaded, and that quote is the price.

Neither method is automatically better. Volume pricing can land well on a small load. Published starting prices tell you where the floor is before you pick up the phone.

Booking and Timing

Their booking system is good, and it would be silly to pretend otherwise. You can book online without a credit card or call a 24-hour line, you get a two-hour arrival window, and the crew calls or texts fifteen to thirty minutes out. Nationally they advertise same-day and off-hours service, including weekends.

Still, that national promise runs into the franchise map. South county closes at 7 p.m. and does not open on Sunday at all. Consequently, a Sunday cleanout in Mission Viejo or San Clemente is outside their published hours even though the brand advertises weekend service.

We work seven days. For a tenant turnover, a close of escrow or a Sunday garage that has to be empty by Monday, that is usually what decides it.

What Each Company Will Take

Their list is broad: appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, hot tubs, pool tables, exercise equipment, renovation debris and tires. They exclude chemicals, solvents and oils, asbestos, storage and oil drums, and oil or waste tanks, along with anything else toxic or hazardous. In addition, they remove refrigerants and oils from appliances before recycling the metal and plastic.

They also state one firm limit: the item has to be liftable by two team members. That rule is the one to pay attention to, because it quietly excludes uprights, safes and slate pool tables.

We draw the same hazardous-waste line, and we send people to OC Waste and Recycling for paint, chemicals and solvents. By contrast, we take the heavy awkward things as a normal part of the work, which is why piano removal has its own starting price.

When 1-800-GOT-JUNK Is the Better Choice

There are real cases here, and several of them are easy to name.

You manage property in more than one state. One national account across roughly 150 locations is simpler than finding a local hauler in every market.

Your business needs recurring service. Their commercial program offers weekly, monthly or quarterly schedules with bulk pricing discounts across multiple sites. We are not set up for that.

You want to book at two in the morning. Online booking and a 24-hour phone line beat waiting for a local company to open.

You are in north county and need a late evening. Weekday service until midnight is a real advantage, and we do not match it.

When We Are the Better Fit

It is Sunday and you are in south county. We work every day of the week across all 34 cities.

You want the number before the truck arrives. Our starting prices are published, and we confirm the total up front.

The item is a piano, a safe or a slate pool table. Two-person lift rules do not apply to us.

You want the same people each time. Landlords and property managers care about this more than anyone else.

How to Decide

Get both quotes. Any reputable company expects it, and on a job of any size the spread between two estimates is worth twenty minutes of your day.
